Amina Desselle Massey, PhD (tanywey) is a sociologist, photographer and interdisciplinary artist based in New Orleans, LA, working to document emotional histories and foster creative community.
Amina’s practice spans portrait and street photography, interviews, music, and mixed-media visual art. Her creative work explores the layered relationships between our memories, emotions, and experiences in community. Building upon traditions of Black American storytelling, Amina’s work uses creative methods to document collective memory, cultural practice, and innovation — often in connection to broader movements for social liberation.
Combining her experience as a sociologist, design justice organizer, and community herbalist, Amina’s work is rooted in a deep commitment to collective care and social transformation. Beyond the studio, she engages and mobilizes communities by developing participatory strategies to co-create public art, reimagine shared spaces, and address the social determinants of health. Amina’s practice utilizes power of creativity to reflect our shared human experiences and to shape safe and joyful futures.
